Time for a change

After 1 year of Record Workz Radio in production, managed by Record Workz Studios Inc. we have decided to make a big change.

This division of Record Workz was built to help sustain the BC electronic music community. Starting with our 24/7 streaming music featuring local and international artists, and expanding to our weekly open deck event. This created an amazing environment for new artists to come and showcase themselves, and for Record Workz to look for new talent within its record label and other business divisions.

Running a radio station takes quite a bit of funds to do. To be completely transparent, we are going to break this down.

Studio rental fees for Open Deck and other radio shows runs us approximately $500 per month. Our radio licensing through SOCAN costs about $130 per year. Server hosting costs us about $50 per month. Advertising and link-tracking services are about $30 per month. Music purchases also cost around 200 every six months when we refresh our base content library. These costs can vary depending on the content being scheduled that week, as some shows require a bit more investment to get produced.

We always have run this project as a community investment, The primary goal has always been to break down barriers to entry for BC electronic artists and provide visibility to our community. To ensure the long-term survival of this project, we have decided to separate it from Record Workz Studios Inc. and form a separate nonprofit entity under Record Workz Radio.

As Record Workz Studios Inc. is a for-profit company, we were not eligible for any community radio grants, as we did not fit the legal definitions of a community radio station. This has prevented us from working with organizations such as the Community Radio Fund of Canada, SOCAN grants, and many more. It also meant we had to focus on finding ways to make a profit to keep this sustainable, which is not what we want the focus to be.

Over the next few months, we will be registering in BC as a nonprofit society, and formally incorporating under the Societies Act. This will allow us to ensure the long-term future of Record Workz Radio and better align with our goals.

We will also be starting a Patreon over the next few weeks to help fund the Open Deck project. We are coming up with some cool perks including event ticket giveaways, radio timeslots, and much more.
